MEET THE TEAM

THE LUNARIA EXPERIENCE

Walking into Lunaria is a bit like walking into a magical fairyland. Sure, there are some practical luminaires but your sensibilities are amused by everything else. Unusual sculptures and materials shapes you haven’t seen and objects you never thought could be illuminated. It truly is a feast for the sensibilities. Beyond lights, there are some great accessories and furniture pieces on display and for sale. We have found adding these other elements to the space makes for a more enjoyable viewing experience, a warm and cozy place to be. With 2 distinct locations in Corte Madera and Berkeley and few duplications from one store to another there really are a lot of fun and varied directions. But let’s get practical, after all this is not a trip to the museum, most people come in actually looking for a light.

Once you catch your bearings the work begins. If you are lucky a seat will be available at the counter so that you can discuss your situation and needs with a lighting expert. Both Alia and Ian bring design savvy and experience to the table along with some practical knowledge and steps that guarantee a successful installation both functionally and aesthetically. There is nothing better than getting what you are looking for where a light is concerned. Something that fits the space by being the right size and style but also A light that functions like you need it to function so that you can do what you need to do. On the website there is a hot link called “How to prepare for your visit” this asks some key questions and lets you know what to bring when you come by.

the conversation begins with our unique back and forth this helps bring lighting candidates to the table. Using our large screen display we turn the typical paper catalogue into an interactive web experience bringing to life the 2-D images with larger scale renditions and additional image sourcing. Often a Pinterest board is set up just for you with options so that you can look at everything in one place. In some cases, we even superimpose a light fixture into your very own room.

What makes Lunaria unique is both the curated environments and this one on one guided selection process. Whether you are a designer or someone who drove by and had to stop in working with us should feel like you hired a designer for an hour to help you illuminate your space. Don’t feel bad if you leave with Homework, we would rather delay a sale to make sure that the fit is correct then deal with the repercussions of the wrong lighting selection. We recommend leading with what is important to you whether it be budget, dimensions, lighting requirements or aesthetic there really is no wrong way to start. And so as they say… “let the games begin”…

ALIA MEYER GAFFNEY

Principal Designer

Having spent several years as a successful interior designer, AliaMeyer Gaffney opened Lunaria as an outlet to share her love of lighting with others in and around the community - a dream that has been met with great success since the opening of the boutique in 2006. Specializing in residential design, material sourcing, lighting design, and custom furniture design and execution,

Rather than fitting a client’s needs into the scope of a signature look, Alia draws from her wealth of experience and innovative furnishings catalogs to shape the design process to the needs of the client. By combining the physical and conceptual aspects of the process, Lunaria aids in allowing the client to be an active part of design development. As a result, the collaboration creates a style “For The Person” that reaches beyond all boundaries.

In the last few years Alia has honed her design skills and become a specialist in both decorative and architectural lighting fixtures selection and lighting design implementation and specification.

Ian gaffney

Principal designer

Ian Gaffney Joined Lunaria in 2013 and has since become an integral part of the business. With a background in Industrial design and his electrical savvy he is a key player in some of our more challenging installations and situations.

Ian can be found at Lunaria East in where his design savvy is bringing additional lighting knowledge and ideas to the design community. When asked, Ian states “I was never comfortable with the idea of being a salesman, for me I bring my enthusiasm for lighting and design to every exchange. People leave my shop feeling like they had a design consultation, newly inspired and ready to take on their project”.
